About this tour

The Brahmatal Trek captures the spiritual heart of Uttarakhand, known as “Dev Bhumi” — the land of the gods. Many believe that deities performed intense penance here, which is why stories of gods and goddesses are common throughout the region.

Brahmatal is a beautiful glacial lake located in the Chamoli district of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The trek begins at Lohajung base camp and reaches a height of 12,250 feet. It offers a moderate challenge and is ideal for beginners.

The journey starts in Kathgodam and lasts about 5 nights and 6 days. Trekkers climb around 4,678 feet in 2 to 3 days to reach Brahmatal. Along the way, you’ll also visit Bekaltal — another stunning glacial lake.

These two lakes are the highlights of the trek. Their natural beauty is breathtaking. Camping beside the icy shores of Bekaltal is a unique and peaceful experience. The serene landscapes and crisp mountain air will leave you refreshed and inspired.

Itinerary

The drive from Kathgodam to Lohajung takes about 9 to 10 hours, including one or two stops for breakfast and lunch. The journey passes through the scenic Kumaon region and the valleys of the Shivalik mountain range.

As the road winds through dense forests and sharp bends, you'll enjoy stunning views of distant mountain peaks. Although there's a direct road from Gwaldam to Deval, recent rains have damaged it, so travelers should take the alternate route.

Deval marks the starting point of the final leg to Lohajung. Most of the road is narrow and twisty. The temperature drops steadily as you climb higher. Even at higher altitudes, the weather remains damp and often foggy.

Spend the night in Lohajung and enjoy a warm dinner to end the day.

The trail leading to the higher sections of Lohajung is well-defined and paved with stone. It passes through a forested area with a few homes along the edges. A short walk brings you to the village of Mandoli. From here, the path climbs into the scenic Kail Valley, nourished by the Pindari and Kail rivers.

As you continue, you’ll notice water pipelines supplying Lohajung. Pause here briefly, then move on toward a cluster of Rhododendron trees and scattered buildings known collectively as Budla. After crossing a creek and a small bridge, you’ll arrive at Begum. Further ahead, the expansive Navali Bugyal captures your attention with its open beauty.

An hour’s climb and another stream crossing will bring you to Gujrani. This area is rich in natural springs and clean streams, perfect for refilling your water bottles. Trek for another hour and a half to reach Bekaltal, a serene lake surrounded by grassy banks and an oak forest — an ideal campsite.

Soon after, you’ll reach another charming lake called Khopdaliya. Set up camp beside its calm waters, enjoy a delicious meal, and retreat to your tents for a peaceful night under the stars.

The ascent to Brahmatal begins right after you leave the campsite, leading you through dense forests of Rhododendron and Oak. After this stretch, you’ll emerge into a meadow and start a steady climb toward the summit. From the top, the trail descends gradually until you reach Brahmatal — a stunning high-altitude glacial lake that stays frozen during winter.

Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the Almora and Nainital valleys. On clear days, majestic peaks like Mt. Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Trishul come into view from select vantage points.

The campsite lies a short distance from Brahmatal Lake and is usually easy to spot. However, in case of heavy snowfall or poor weather, the group may stay at Khabekhal instead. After passing through another forested patch, you’ll arrive at the campsite. Set up your tents, enjoy a warm meal, and rest for the night under the mountain skies.

Today’s trek involves a steady altitude gain and a challenging uphill climb. Start your trek and reach Chota Jhandidar in about an hour. From there, the trail winds its way to Bada Jhandidar and eventually to the summit. The zigzagging path is flanked by deep valleys on both sides and takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete.

At Brahmatal Top, you're rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Himalayas. The clear blue sky adds to the beauty. Views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti are sharper and even more stunning than the day before. The panoramic vistas of the Himalayan ranges are truly awe-inspiring.

After soaking in the views, begin your descent toward Daldum camp. The trail takes you through a dense forest and takes roughly 3 hours to reach camp. Once there, pitch your tents, cook a warm meal, and rest for the night.

Your homestay accommodation is on a twin-sharing basis. After breakfast, begin your descent through the forested trail. The trek covers about 3 kilometers and takes 2 to 3 hours. Within 30 minutes, you’ll reach Malling, where you’ll start to see scattered hillside homes.

Follow the familiar stone-paved path used regularly by locals. Continue along this route until you arrive back in Lohajung. Enjoy dinner at your pre-booked hotel and settle in for your final night of the trek.

Today marks your final breakfast with the Himalayan Hikers team on this incredible journey. After sharing a few final laughs and capturing some beautiful group photos, you'll receive your trek completion certificates. With warm farewells and lasting memories, we’ll part ways — wrapping up an unforgettable adventure through Lohajung and the Brahmatal trek.
