Itinerary

The road from Dehradun to Sankri winds through Mussoorie, Nowgaon, Purola, and Mori, offering a blend of charming towns and mountain landscapes. After gaining altitude in Mussoorie, the journey continues past Kempty Falls, where the Yamuna River briefly joins the route.

A few kilometers ahead, the road takes you into dense pine forests, filling the air with a crisp, refreshing scent. As you approach Mori, the Tons River — the Yamuna’s largest tributary and a popular spot for rafting — runs alongside you.

The scenic drive begins early in the morning to ensure arrival in Sankri by sunset. The 190-kilometer journey takes about 8 to 9 hours to complete.

After breakfast, we leave Sankri early and begin the trek to Juda Ka Talab. The trail starts in the village, passing through another small settlement called Saud. Along the way, you’ll see schoolchildren heading to class and local women starting their daily chores.

Soon, the path enters a dense pine forest and begins a steep climb up to a ridge. Once on the ridge, the trail widens and becomes more level. The thick canopy of pine and maple trees blocks much of the sunlight, keeping the forest trail cool and shaded.

Eventually, we reach Juda Ka Talab — a serene lake known for its unique floating landmasses. We set up camp beside the lake and enjoy dinner under a sky full of stars.

After passing Juda Ka Talab, the trail continues into dense pine forests. As you hike further, you’ll reach a scenic meadow dotted with shepherd huts. From there, the path climbs another 1,000 feet, leading to your destination for the day — Kedarkantha Base Camp.

This stretch takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete and offers stunning views throughout. It’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers, with its rich forest cover and occasional glimpses of wildlife.

Due to the lack of insulation and exposure to open air, the base camp is noticeably cooler than other parts of the trail. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of Uttarakhand’s famous peaks, making it a perfect camping spot.

After leaving Juda Ka Talab, the trail winds deeper into a dense pine forest. Continue along the path, and you’ll reach a beautiful meadow scattered with shepherd cottages. From there, a steady climb of about 1,000 feet takes you to Kedarkantha Base Camp — your destination for the day. This part of the trek takes around 2 to 3 hours and offers breathtaking views, making it a favorite for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The base camp, being more exposed and lacking natural insulation, is colder than the surrounding areas. From here, you can see many of Uttarakhand’s iconic peaks stretching out in the distance, making it a perfect place to camp.

According to local legend, this mountain was originally meant to be the site of the Kedarnath Temple. Lord Shiva, disguised as a bull to avoid the Pandavas, was meditating here but was disturbed by locals. As a result, he shifted to the current location of Kedarnath.

After spending time at the peak, you’ll descend back to the base camp. Following lunch, begin a short 2 km trek to Hargaon, a vast and scenic campsite on the way to Sankri. Enjoy an overnight stay here before bidding farewell to this enchanting landscape.

Today, we begin our return to Sankri. The 4-kilometer trek takes about 2 to 3 hours and offers a gentle, reflective walk through the forested trail.

Once back in Sankri — the gateway to the Har Ki Dun Valley — you’ll have time to explore the village and nearby hamlets like Gangad and Osla. Sankri, with its charming “Pahari” culture and warm hospitality, provides a perfect end to the trek. It also marks the final entry point into the Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary.

Though it’s always comforting to return, the journey back to Dehradun is not without its own charm. As we retrace our route, the dense pine forests slowly give way to winding mountain roads and eventually to the wide, bustling highways leading into the city. It’s a transition from tranquil wilderness back to the rhythm of everyday life — a bittersweet end to an unforgettable adventure.
