Kedarnath Temple stands at 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), about 223 km (139 miles) from Rishikesh. It sits on the banks of the Mandakini River, a tributary of the Ganga. Built from stone, the temple’s exact origin and builder remain unknown.
The name “Kedarnath” means “the lord of the field.” It comes from the Sanskrit words kedara (field) and natha (lord). According to the Kashi Kedara Mahatmya, this name reflects the belief that “the crop of liberation” grows here.
Many local legends link Lord Shiva, the Garhwal region, and the creation of the Panch Kedar temples.
Pilgrims who visit the Panch Kedar temples to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings often follow an unwritten tradition. They end their journey by visiting the Badrinath Temple, offering final prayers to Lord Vishnu as a sign of completing their spiritual quest.
