About this tour

The Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek is a captivating adventure through the Kumaon Himalayas in Uttarakhand, reaching an altitude of 4,750 meters. Once a popular route in the 1990s, the trek now begins from Rilkot due to road extension, making the journey shorter.

This trek is renowned for its stunning scenery, offering sweeping views of majestic Himalayan peaks, verdant valleys, and secluded villages. Along the way, you’ll cross mountain streams and navigate rugged terrain shaped by seasonal monsoon landslides.

While the trek is of moderate difficulty, certain sections can be challenging due to rocky patches. Despite this, the effort is well rewarded as you venture deep into one of the most picturesque regions of the Indian Himalayas.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathgodam to Munsiyari, traversing lush valleys, dense forests, and picturesque hill towns such as Almora and Thal. The road winds through the majestic Himalayas, providing stunning views of snow-capped peaks along the way. Upon reaching Munsiyari, the gateway to high-altitude treks, you'll be greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view of the Panchachuli Peaks.

After breakfast, a scenic drive takes you deeper into the mountains to Rilkot, the last motorable point. En route, you pass Lilam and Martoli, small villages with rich history and traditional Himalayan charm. Rilkot, located along the Gori Ganga River, serves as the starting point of your trekking adventure.

Your trek kicks off on a well-marked trail that follows the river, gradually ascending through alpine meadows and sparse forests. As you progress, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Eventually, you'll reach Panchhu/Ganghar, a picturesque campsite nestled amidst towering peaks. Settle in for a peaceful night under the starry sky in your tents.

A challenging yet rewarding day awaits as you make your way toward the Nanda Devi East Base Camp. The trail involves a 4 km ascent followed by a 3 km descent, guiding you through rocky terrain, moraines, and pristine meadows. As you near the base camp, the majestic Nanda Devi (25,643 ft) emerges in its full glory, offering an awe-inspiring view that makes every step worth it. Take time to absorb the breathtaking scenery before settling into your campsite for the night.

Begin the day with a short 3 km trek to explore the glacier region near the base camp. The landscape here is nothing short of surreal, with glacial streams and expansive meadows that provide stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas. After soaking in the beauty, return to base camp for lunch, then embark on a 7 km descent back to Panchhu/Ganghar.

Follow the same scenic route back, crossing mountain streams and wandering through alpine forests. The descent to Rilkot is more gradual, making the journey easier. Take in the tranquil Himalayan landscapes one last time before reaching the motorable road.

Leave behind the serene high-altitude trails as you drive back to Munsiyari. Upon arrival, unwind at your hotel and take some time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences of your trek.

If the buffer day is not required during the trek, you can spend it exploring Munsiyari. One option is to hike up to Khaliya Top, a stunning viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the Panchachuli Peaks and the surrounding Himalayas. Alternatively, you can visit local attractions such as the Birthi Waterfall or the Munsiyari Tribal Museum.

The adventure concludes as you drive back to Kathgodam, reflecting on the unforgettable memories of your Himalayan journey.
