About this tour

The Pindari and Kafni Glacier trek in Uttarakhand is available twice a year—during the spring and summer months from mid-April to mid-June, and again in autumn from mid-September to mid-October. The journey begins at Khati village (2,210 meters), the last inhabited village on the route. From there, the trail leads to Dwali (2,700 meters), a common stop for both treks.

The Pindari Glacier trek continues from Dwali to Zero Point (3,660 meters), a more beginner-friendly section with gradual ascents. In contrast, the Kafni Glacier trek branches off from Dwali towards Khatia (3,200 meters) and then progresses to Kafni Glacier (3,860 meters). This part is more challenging, with rocky, boulder-filled paths and unmarked trails that have been affected by landslides.

Altogether, the trek spans about 68 kilometers, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and glacial landscapes. Trekking outside the official seasons is not recommended due to the heavy monsoon rains, which bring landslides, as well as the harsh winter conditions with deep snow and freezing temperatures.

Itinerary

The journey begins bright and early at 6:30 AM from Kathgodam, where a shared Bolero will pick up the trekking group. The drive lasts around 8-9 hours, passing through scenic towns such as Bhimtal, Almora, and Kapkot, before reaching Khati Village—the last inhabited village on the trek. Upon arrival in the evening, the trek leader will welcome the group and escort them to a comfortable homestay for the night. After dinner, the trek leader will conduct a briefing session to introduce trekkers to the challenges and expectations of the adventure ahead.

The trek starts at 7:00 AM after a hearty breakfast, with a packed lunch provided for the journey. The 13 km trail from Khati to Dwali features a blend of gradual ascents and descents, winding through dense forests, crossing wooden bridges, and passing by streams. Along the way, trekkers are treated to scenic views of the Pindar River flowing beside the trail. By late afternoon or early evening, the group will reach Dwali, where they will check into a guesthouse for dinner and an overnight stay.

After the long trek the previous day, today’s journey begins later in the morning, following a relaxed breakfast. The 5 km trail from Dwali to Phurkiya features moderate ascents, with a steep 2 km climb toward the end. Along the way, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and picturesque alpine landscapes. By late afternoon, the group will arrive in Phurkiya, where they can enjoy lunch and rest. The evening is free for exploring the surroundings before dinner and an overnight stay in a guesthouse.

The day begins with an early morning start to catch the sunrise at Baba Ji Math, where trekkers will be treated to hot tea. After a brief rest, the trek resumes towards Pindari Glacier Zero Point. This 7 km ascent offers stunning views of the glacier, towering ice walls, and surrounding peaks. After spending some time at Zero Point to take in the magnificent scenery, the group will descend back to Baba Ji Ashram for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, the trek continues to Phurkiya for an overnight stay.

Today is one of the most challenging days of the trek. The journey begins early with a 5 km descent from Phurkiya to Dwali, arriving by 8-9 AM. From Dwali, the trek takes an uphill route towards Khatiya, covering 7 km of rugged, boulder-strewn terrain affected by past landslides. The trail is unmarked and steep, demanding extra attention and caution. Trekkers will reach Khatiya by early evening and settle into guesthouses or tents for a well-earned dinner and rest.

The day starts with an early morning 5 km trek towards Kafni Glacier Zero Point. The trail takes you through untouched meadows, offering stunning views of the Kafni River's source. Once at Zero Point, trekkers will have time to marvel at the glacier as it melts into the river. After soaking in the scenery, the group will retrace the route back to Khatiya for lunch. Following a restful break, the trek continues with a 7 km descent to Dwali, where the group will arrive by evening for dinner and an overnight stay at a guesthouse.

After a long trek the day before, today’s journey begins later in the morning. The 13 km trail back to Khati village winds through forests, mountain streams, and glacial rivers, providing a scenic yet manageable descent. Trekkers will arrive in Khati by evening, where they will spend the night in a homestay, savoring a warm meal and reflecting on the adventure.

After breakfast, a shared Bolero will take the group from Khati to Bharadi, where they will transfer to another vehicle for the final leg of the journey back to Kathgodam. The trek concludes upon reaching Kathgodam in the evening, bringing this unforgettable adventure to a close.
