About this tour

Ralam Dhura Pass is a rugged, high-altitude ridge that links the historic Johar Valley to the secluded Darma Valley. Standing at 5,645 meters, it ranks among the toughest treks in the Kumaon region. Starting from Munsiyari, the trek culminates in the serene Darma Valley, nestled at the foot of the towering Panchachuli peaks. This expedition is not for the faint of heart; even seasoned trekkers will find it physically and mentally taxing. It demands outstanding endurance, resilience, and a profound appreciation for the harsh beauty of the Himalayas.

Among the most challenging sections are the descent to the Yangchiri Glacier from Yangchiri Pass and the steep, technical drop from Ralam Dhura to Nipuchukang, where ropes are often essential for safe navigation. The trail cuts through rugged glaciers, towering ridges, and unspoiled wilderness, making this trek a true test of both skill and determination. For adventurers seeking an unforgettable Himalayan challenge, Ralam Dhura Pass offers an exhilarating experience that pushes the limits of endurance.

Itinerary

Your journey kicks off with a picturesque drive from Kathgodam to Munsiyari, a tranquil town tucked away in the hills of Uttarakhand. Spanning about 280 km, the drive takes 9-10 hours, winding through charming towns like Almora, Bageshwar, and Thal. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of lush valleys, dense pine forests, and glimpses of the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas. Munsiyari, often called the "Little Kashmir of Uttarakhand," is the gateway to the serene Johar Valley, encircled by the towering Panchachuli range.

After an early breakfast, a brief drive takes you to Lilam, where your trek begins. The journey starts with a steady climb alongside the Gori Ganga River, offering breathtaking views of steep gorges and lush, green landscapes. As you continue, the trail meanders through dense rhododendron and oak forests before reaching Paton Village, a quaint and charming hamlet renowned for its traditional houses and welcoming locals.

The trek from Paton to Lungriani takes you through rugged terrain, crossing wooden bridges over glacial streams. As you follow the Gori Ganga valley, the trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows and rocky paths. The stunning scenery, along with occasional glimpses of Himalayan wildlife, makes this day an unforgettable adventure.

Today's trek takes you further into the remote Johar Valley, where the altitude increases and vegetation thins. The trail features steep ascents and rocky stretches, challenging your endurance. Killadum, a high-altitude campsite, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers and snow-capped ridges.

The trek progresses toward Ralam Village, a picturesque settlement in the upper Johar region. Along the way, trekkers will be treated to breathtaking alpine landscapes, vast moraine fields, and crystal-clear streams fed by melting glaciers. Ralam Village is a crucial acclimatization stop, preparing you for the higher altitudes ahead.

The trail from Ralam Village to Yangchuri Base Camp (YBC) takes trekkers through rugged glacier moraine fields and steep, high-altitude ridges. As you ascend, the terrain becomes increasingly difficult, with loose rocks and icy stretches. The YBC campsite is nestled in a dramatic setting, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, offering stunning panoramic views.

This brief yet steep trek takes you to Ralam Dhura Base Camp, the final stop before the critical pass crossing. The trail ascends through rocky moraines and glacier sections, presenting a tough challenge. The campsite rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of snow-covered peaks and the deep valleys below.

This is the most demanding and exhilarating day of the expedition. The climb to Ralam Dhura Pass (5,645m) is steep and requires careful navigation across ice, snow, and rocky ridges. Upon reaching the pass, trekkers are treated to a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding Himalayas. The descent towards Nipakchung Valley is just as challenging, with technical sections that may require the use of ropes for safe passage. The valley, encircled by towering peaks, becomes the next campsite.

The trek slowly descends into the serene Darma Valley, one of Uttarakhand's lesser-explored gems. The trail meanders through lush alpine meadows, crossing glacial streams and rocky terrain. Sipu, a quaint and picturesque settlement, offers a peaceful stop for trekkers to rest and recuperate after the challenging pass crossing.

Today's trek is relatively moderate, taking you towards the charming Dantu Village. As you descend to lower altitudes, the landscape shifts to lush green meadows and vibrant rhododendron forests. Dantu, one of the traditional villages of the Darma Valley, is known for its friendly and welcoming locals, making it a perfect place to relax and experience the local culture.

An early morning trek leads you to the stunning Panchachuli Base Camp, where you’ll be treated to an up-close view of the iconic five peaks. The trail is relatively easy, featuring gentle ascents through picturesque meadows. After taking in the mesmerizing views at the base camp, the trek descends to Dugtu. From there, a 70 km drive brings you to Dharchula, a town located near the India-Nepal border.

This additional day is set aside for any contingencies, such as bad weather or unexpected delays. If not needed, trekkers can take the opportunity to explore Dharchula, a town rich in local culture and trade history.

The adventure ends with a scenic drive from Dharchula back to Kathgodam, bringing an end to this thrilling high-altitude trek. As you travel along winding mountain roads and through lush valleys, you'll be treated to one last stunning view of the majestic Himalayan landscapes.
