The Sunderdhunga Trek, nestled in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, is a hidden gem in the Kumaon Himalayas. Often regarded as one of the most scenic treks in the region, it is considered even more beautiful than its well-known counterparts, the Pindari and Kafni Glacier treks. The highest points of the trek, Nagkund (4,350 meters) and Devi Kund (4,200 meters), offer stunning panoramic views of towering peaks such as Maiktoli, Devtoli, Panwali Dwar, and Baljuri.
The trail leads you through remote villages like Jaitoli, dense forests, and rugged riverbanks, eventually unfolding into breathtaking meadows. While the journey is visually rewarding, it is also quite challenging. The path is rough and rocky, especially between Sirai and Kathaliya, making it unsuitable for beginners. Even seasoned trekkers should approach the terrain with caution. The trek begins and ends at Dau Village, located just 1 km before Khati, the last inhabited village on the route.

Your journey begins early in the morning with a 6:30 AM pickup from Kathgodam in a shared Bolero. The scenic drive to Dau takes around 8-9 hours, passing through Almora and Bageshwar, offering glimpses of lush valleys and winding mountain roads. Upon arrival in Dau by evening, the trek leader will welcome you and guide you to a homestay for an overnight stay. After dinner, a briefing session will be conducted to discuss possible challenges during the trek and safety measures.
After an early breakfast, the trek begins at 7 AM. The initial descent of about 2 km takes you down to the Pindar River at Ridang. From here, the trail gradually ascends for 5 km through beautiful forested landscapes. Along the way, you can enjoy light refreshments like fruits and dry fruits. By around 2 PM, you will reach Jaitoli, where a freshly cooked lunch awaits. Spend the evening relaxing before dinner and an overnight stay in a homestay or camp.
The trek begins at 8 AM following breakfast. As you journey along the route, you’ll be immersed in dense forests, providing a peaceful and serene connection with nature. The final stretch leads you to the riverbank, where you’ll arrive at Sirai, a calm and remote campsite nestled in the wilderness. Spend the evening soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings before settling in for an overnight stay.
This section is the most difficult part of the trek. The trail runs alongside a glacial river, with rugged terrain featuring large boulders and landslide-prone areas. Given the tough nature of this stretch, trekkers must move cautiously, and even seasoned hikers may need extra attention. Once you reach Kathaliya, take time to rest and recover from the day's strenuous journey, followed by a well-deserved dinner and an overnight stay.
The day begins early at 6 AM with a packed lunch, as the trail heads towards the stunning Maiktoli Base Camp. Along the way, you'll pause at the historic Sukhram Cave. The goal is to reach the base camp by noon, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan peaks. After spending some time soaking in the scenery, you'll begin the return trek to Kathaliya, aiming to arrive by 4:30 PM for rest and an overnight stay.
After the challenging trek the previous day, today begins with a more relaxed start. The 4 km ascent, though short, takes you to Baluni Top, an open ridge offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Spend the night camping beneath the stars, surrounded by the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountains.
Today promises to be one of the most scenic days of the trek. Starting early allows ample time to explore Devi Kund and Nagkund. The trail steadily ascends through meadows and rocky sections, providing uninterrupted views of snow-capped peaks. Baluni Top offers an ideal vantage point, showcasing breathtaking views of the Sunderdhunga Valley. The aim is to return to Baluni Top by 4:30 PM for a well-deserved overnight stay.
After the long trek yesterday, today starts with a more relaxed pace. The trail descends back to Kathaliya, where lunch will be served. Following a well-deserved break, the descent continues along the same route, eventually reaching Sirai for an overnight stay.
The return trek takes you through dense forests and mountain streams, featuring a blend of gradual ascents and descents. By afternoon, you'll arrive at Jaitoli, where you can relax, enjoy an evening meal, and settle in for an overnight stay.
Retracing the same route, you'll descend to the Pindar River before gradually ascending towards Dau. Upon arrival, indulge in a warm meal and take some time to reflect on the incredible journey, before settling in for the night at the homestay.
