The Traill’s Pass Trek is a thrilling and demanding high-altitude expedition, taking you from the picturesque Pindari Valley to the remote Johar Valley. Reaching an elevation of 5,312 meters (17,400 feet), this trek is for seasoned trekkers with prior experience at high altitudes and exceptional physical fitness, testing your endurance, skill, and mental strength.
Over the course of 13 days, the trek offers stunning vistas, immersive cultural experiences, and deep historical significance. First crossed in 1930 by Sir William Traill, the British Commissioner of Kumaon, along with Malak Singh Ji of Supi Village, the pass was a vital trade route connecting the Pindari and Milam Valleys. Malak Singh Ji’s pioneering efforts earned him the honorary title of Patwari of Danpur, a tribute to his invaluable contribution to the region.
The adventure begins at Khati Village, the last inhabited settlement in Pindari Valley, marking the ideal starting point for this epic journey. The best time to take on this trek is from May to June and September to October, when weather conditions are most favorable for tackling the rugged terrain.
With its breathtaking scenery, rich history, and extreme challenges, the Traill’s Pass Trek offers an unparalleled adventure for those seeking to test their limits amidst the majestic Kumaon Himalayas.

The Traill’s Pass Trek is more than just a hike; it’s a high-altitude challenge that pushes your stamina, strength, and mental resilience. Over 12-14 days, you’ll navigate steep ascents, glacier crossings, and rugged terrain. Preparation is crucial to make the journey safe and enjoyable.
Here’s how to prepare for the trek:
Trekking for 6-8 hours at 5,000m is demanding. The lower oxygen levels will require extra effort from your lungs and heart. Start building stamina with:
Jogging or Running: Start with 3-5 km, gradually increasing to 8-10 km.
Cycling (15-20 km): Strengthens legs and boosts endurance.
Skipping Rope (5-10 minutes): Improves stamina and coordination.
Stair Climbing: Skip the elevator and use stairs whenever possible to simulate incline trekking.
📌 Tip: Try running or cycling with a backpack to simulate trek conditions.
Your legs, core, and shoulders will do most of the work. Prepare them with strength exercises:
Leg Strength (for uphill trekking):
Squats (3 sets x 15 reps)
Lunges (3 sets x 12 reps per leg)
Step-Ups (3 sets x 15 reps per leg)
Calf Raises (3 sets x 20 reps)
Core & Upper Body (for carrying a backpack):
Planks (Hold for 60 sec, 3 sets)
Push-ups (3 sets x 15 reps)
Deadlifts (Light Weights) (3 sets x 10 reps)
Pull-ups/Resistance Band Rows (3 sets x 10 reps)
📌 Tip: Practice trekking with a 7-10 kg backpack to get used to carrying weight.
Long hours of trekking in cold weather can lead to tight muscles. Incorporate stretching or yoga into your routine to improve flexibility:
Hamstring & Quad Stretches: Prevent leg stiffness.
Hip & Ankle Mobility Exercises: Helps with balance on uneven terrain.
Neck & Shoulder Stretches: Reduces strain from carrying a backpack.
📌 Tip: Stretch before and after workouts to stay injury-free.
Acclimatization is critical to avoid altitude sickness. Practice and preparation at higher altitudes will help:
Practice Hiking at Higher Altitudes: Trek at 3,000m+ if possible.
Breathing Exercises (Pranayama): 10-15 minutes daily to improve lung capacity.
Increase Stair Climbing & Hill Walks: Strengthen legs for steep ascents.
📌 Tip: Trekking at high altitudes is about pacing, not speed. Control your breathing and keep a steady rhythm.
Fuel your body for the physical challenge:
Eat Protein-Rich Foods: Eggs, dal, paneer, chicken, tofu for muscle recovery.
Increase Carbohydrates: Rice, oats, whole wheat, fruits for sustained energy.
Healthy Fats: Nuts, seeds, and avocados for endurance.
Drink 3-4 Liters of Water Daily: Hydration helps prevent altitude sickness.
📌 Tip: Avoid alcohol and smoking—they reduce oxygen efficiency at high altitudes.
The trek is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Prepare for the mental hurdles with these tips:
Push Your Limits: Train by trekking when tired, walk extra miles, carry weight.
Prepare for Harsh Weather: Expect freezing nights, strong winds, and unpredictable snow.
Accept Basic Conditions: No luxury, no soft beds, and limited food.
📌 Tip: Stay positive, embrace the challenge, and remember—the experience will be unforgettable!
Proper training will set you up for success on the Traill’s Pass Trek. Prepare your body and mind for an adventure that will challenge you like never before!
Your journey starts with a picturesque drive from Kathgodam, the entrance to Kumaon, toward the quaint village of Khati. The route takes you through dense forests, charming villages, and winding mountain paths. As you reach Khati, the last inhabited settlement in the Pindari Valley, you'll be greeted by its traditional wooden homes and the warm hospitality of the locals.
The trek begins with a steady climb alongside the Pindar River, as the trail meanders through lush rhododendron and oak forests. Along the way, you'll catch sight of stunning waterfalls and vibrant birdlife. After crossing wooden bridges and navigating rocky paths, you reach Dwali, a peaceful campsite nestled at the confluence of the Pindari and Kafni streams.
Today’s trek takes you further into the rugged high-altitude terrain. As you ascend, the vegetation diminishes, giving way to wide meadows and snow-covered peaks. The air grows thinner, and the majestic Himalayan giants draw nearer. Upon reaching Base Camp, you’ll settle in, surrounded by sweeping views of glaciers and towering mountains.
To acclimatize to the high altitude, today is dedicated to carrying essential supplies to Advance Base Camp. This load ferrying helps ease the trek in the coming days. The terrain includes rocky moraines and icy sections, giving you a preview of the challenges that lie ahead.
As you ascend, the trail to Advance Base Camp (ABC) becomes steeper, passing through rugged terrain and glacial moraines. With the thinning air, acclimatization becomes increasingly important. Once at ABC, you'll be greeted by breathtaking views of Nanda Devi and the surrounding peaks, preparing you for the most challenging phase of the expedition.
Today, you'll carry equipment and supplies to Camp 1. The ascent becomes more technical, with careful navigation required over crevasses and icy ridges. This step helps prepare for a smoother transition to the higher camps in the days to come.
Following proper acclimatization, the team ascends to Camp 1. The elevation gain is substantial, and the challenging terrain pushes endurance to its limits. The campsite rewards you with breathtaking views of glaciers and towering peaks, under a sky full of stars.
A brief yet technical climb brings you to Camp 2. This stretch involves navigating icy walls and crevasses, requiring the use of ropes and specialized gear. Camp 2 serves as the last high-altitude base before making the final push to the pass.
The highlight of the expedition has arrived—crossing Traill’s Pass! This challenging day requires navigating steep icy slopes and unpredictable weather, demanding careful footwork and focus. Reaching the top rewards you with stunning views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, and other towering peaks. The descent to Moren Camp is equally tough, as you traverse icy and rocky terrain.
As you leave the rugged glacial terrain behind, the trail descends into serene alpine meadows. The landscape shifts dramatically, with glacial lakes and lush grasslands coming into view. Rata Dantal, a tranquil high-altitude lake, offers a peaceful and picturesque camping spot.
As you continue your descent, the trek brings you to Martoli, a historic village rich in Indo-Tibetan trade history. Nestled amidst breathtaking Himalayan views, Martoli offers a peaceful spot to relax and immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the region.
The trek continues along the Gori Ganga River to Rilkot, offering a relatively easy route. From Rilkot, a scenic drive takes you to Munsiyari, a charming Himalayan town renowned for its stunning views of the Panchachuli peaks.
This day acts as a buffer for any weather delays during the trek. If all goes according to plan, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Munsiyari, visiting attractions like the Tribal Heritage Museum, Nanda Devi Temple, or simply soaking in the breathtaking mountain views.
The final stretch of the journey is a long yet scenic drive back to Kathgodam, winding through lush valleys, mountain roads, and quaint villages. As you leave the Himalayas behind, you carry with you the unforgettable memories and the spirit of Traill’s Pass.
